With Trump and Elon Musk stirring debate on the national stage, Olson Strategies' Dustin Olson joined Salem News Channel’s Stacy Washington NOW with Stacy Washington to talk through the titanic clash, the stakes of the “big, beautiful” bill, and what polling is telling us ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Dustin Olson noted the intensity of the moment:
“This is not the typical kind of feud. These are two very powerful people—one the wealthiest man in the world, one the most powerful. It’s like Godzilla vs. Mothra.”
Regarding the clash between Trump and Musk, Olson had this to say:
"However, I would have to say for myself, while I approve of the Trump agenda and what he's done, I also have concerns about the debt like Elon Musk does. We have a huge debt crisis and a quarter of our payments are going to servicing that debt." Olson said. "So you can be on both sides of this issue and agree with both of them, but it's going to take a while to get this huge ocean liner turned around."
“If it doesn’t pass, it’ll be the largest tax hike in American history—and Republicans would be doomed for the midterms.”
Olson emphasized the importance of seeing the bill through, even if it’s not perfect:
“It slows down the spending. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than what we had a year ago when we were adding a trillion in debt every 100 days.”
New numbers suggest a significant shift in public sentiment:
“Generally, Americans do feel pretty optimistic about the economy right now.” Olson said.
Time will tell how it all plays out.
